Steering Committee Meeting #5 | August 11, 2025

On August 11, 2025, Carlsbad Municipal Schools held the fifth meeting of the steering committee.

Presented final design options for School Board consideration.
Key points:
  • Mission Statement: Pride, accessibility, belonging, modern/flexible spaces for college/career readiness.
  • Modernization Needs: Building/seismic codes, academic/CTE upgrades, growth, HVAC, ADA, infrastructure issues.
  • Renovation vs. New: New construction more efficient due to swing space limits and phasing costs.
  • Student Feedback: Outdoor eating, open areas, better bathrooms, Caverns connection, fresh air/light, art.
  • Community Feedback: Support modernization, ADA compliance, keeping Main, shaded seating, safety, expanded CTE/labs.
  • Final Options:
  • Canyon: Keeps/centers Main; compact campus; 8 years; $291M (Alta Vista swing). Less academy flexibility.
  • Cavern: Consolidated building; 3 years; $193M ($242M with repurposed Main). More flexibility, less campus feel.
  • Safety & Belonging: Visibility, access control, zoning, student connection to spaces.
Next Steps: Board vote on September 16, 2025.
