Real-World Learning at Ocotillo

Ocotillo Elementary, under the leadership of Principal Amy Coll, is implementing the innovative MicroSociety program to provide students with a highly engaging, real-world learning experience. MicroSociety transforms the school into a miniature, student-run community where learners take on roles such as business owners, government leaders, employees, and citizens.
Through this model, students apply academic skills in authentic contexts—managing businesses, earning and spending currency, participating in a functioning economy, and solving real-world problems. This hands-on approach strengthens critical thinking, collaboration, financial literacy, and civic responsibility.
Principal Coll’s leadership has been instrumental in bringing this vision to life, creating a dynamic environment where students are not only learning content, but actively experiencing how their education connects to the real world.
